PhD Student in Canada Detained in Turkey
Please contact your Member of Parliament to make them aware of Cihan Erdal's situation.
I am not breaking this story myself, but my goal is simply to spread it, as I have been told Cihan and his boyfriend are desperate. I hope my other fellow Canadian citizens can help pressure our government to assist Erdal in whatever way possible.
Cihan Erdal is a Canadian permanent resident being arbitrarily detained in Turkey. Their claims against him are dubious, and the prosecution is relying on Facebook posts shared by Erdal to allege he expressed support for terrorism. These are the only pieces of evidence the prosecution has against Erdal, yet he is in a high-security prison and spending time in solitary confinement (do note that solitary confinement over 15 days is largely known as a form of torture).
Please read more about this, including Cihan’s letter from prison, here.
The Canadian Council for Refugees has a handy guide for contacting your Member of Parliament, which can be found here. You can use this tool to find your MP.
